Pacific Women

The pacific region is extremely diverse in culture, people and languages. Pacific Islands have in common isthe view that the opression of women’s rights is acceptable. Violence and abuse against women in Pacific community is tolerated and acceptable to a certain extent. Culture and tradition are commonly used as an excuse for gross violations of human rights, but can it still stand in today’s globalizing and developing world?

The answer is NO. Action must be taken to enforce the rights of women as first class citizens equal to men. Women’s identity and self assertion should be promoted by governmental institution and society as a whole. Regardless of tradition, human rights are universal and must be enforced for the sake of our generation and generations to come.
